Washington

Students at a Washington school along with their parents has held protests after three teachers were reportedly fired for adding black history to their social studies.

The social studies teachers at Howard University Middle School of Mathematics and Science were dismissed for adding African-American history to the curriculum.

At least 100 students held demonstrations on Monday outside the school to protest the actions taken by the school administration, including Principal Angelicque Blackmon.

“They were all escorted out by police officers because they were trying to teach us things about our African heritage,” said seventh-grader Kameron Gains-Gillens.

“The school administration does not want the social studies teachers to teach African-American history,” said parent Shannon Settle. “We are on the campus of an HBCU [Historically Black Colleges and Universities]. We need to know our culture; the school is 90 percent African-American.”

The protesters demanded new social studies teachers be treated with respect and more communication from Blackmon, who was “antisocial” and abrasive according to the parents and students.

The students also called on the school officials to display less negative attention and not to track them for the “school to prison pipeline.”

The majority of students at the school are African-Americans. The protest has gone viral on social networking sites. The incident comes at a time of flaring racial tensions in the US.
