France’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development Laurent Fabius condemned “with gravity the decision of the Israeli authorities to approve the construction of 2610 housing units in Israeli settlement of Givat Hamatos in Jerusalem, Friday said a statement issued by Consulate general of France in Jerusalem.
“If this decision was to be maintained, it would mean the creation of a new settlement in East-Jerusalem, for the first time in more than 15 years. This announcement directly threatens the two-state solution and Jerusalem’s vocation to become the capital of these two States, just when all efforts should converge toward peace,” stated the statement.
“We urgently call on the Israeli authorities to reconsider this decision. One cannot pretend to plead for a solution and at the very same moment act against it, without relevant consequences being drawn, notably within the European Union,” concluded the statement.
